Getting Started

LEARN YOUR WAY AROUND THE EXCEL WINDOW, THE BASICS OF CREATING AND SAVING EXCEL FILES, AND HOW TO COLOR-CODE AND REARRANGE WORKSHEETS FOR EASE OF USE.

Details:

  • Become familiar with the various elements of the Excel window and their functions, including the ribbons, galleries, tabs, row and column indicators, sheet tabs, and more.
  • Access the help files in Excel.
  • Make your workbooks easier to use by color-coding and renaming your sheet tabs. You can also move, copy, insert and delete sheets.
  • Create a new blank workbook, create a new workbook based on a template, how to search for and open an existing file, and how to save a workbook. You can even save an Excel workbook or part of a workbook as a Web page to make it available on the web.

Formatting Excel

LEARN THE BASICS OF ROWS AND COLUMNS – THE STRUCTURE THROUGH WHICH EXCEL STORES YOUR INFORMATION – AND HOW TO MANAGE THEM ONSCREEN FOR EASE OF USE.  BEGIN ENTERING INFORMATION INTO YOUR EXCEL FILE – EXPLORE TECHNIQUES FOR QUICK ENTRY, BASIC CALCULATIONS, AND KEEPING CRITICAL INFORMATION AVAILABLE AT A GLANCE.

Details:

  • Excel organizes data in rows and columns. In this lesson you will learn how to select, insert and delete, and resize rows and columns. When working in long spreadsheets you may find Freeze Panes useful to keep part of your data in view while scrolling through the rest.
  • In this lesson you will learn how to enter data in a cell, select cells and ranges, move and copy data, use AutoFill to copy data or enter a series of data, and how to delete data.
  • Before you print a worksheet it is a good idea to set up pages items such as headers and footers, margins, page orientation, and page break locations.
  • Use the Find feature to search your workbook for particular contents or choose Replace to edit the contents of specific contents across your workbook.
  • Enhance the look of your worksheet by applying formats.  Once you find a format you like, you can copy the format to other cells using the Format Painter. If there is a format you want applied throughout the workbook, create a style to ensure consistency.

Getting Started with Formulas

HAVING ENTERED YOUR DATA AND CALCULATIONS, EXPLORE A VARIETY OF TECHNIQUES FOR GIVING THEM A VISUALLY ATTRACTIVE, EASY-TO-UNDERSTAND APPEARANCE.  EASILY ARRANGE AND FILTER DATA TO DISPLAY JUST THE INFORMATION YOU NEED IN A MOMENT, AND SET UP THE FILE FOR PRINTING.

Details:

  • Formulas allow you to develop a wide variety of data from simple addition to complex financial and statistical calculations. In this lesson you will become familiar with creating formulas using the Formula bar, AutoSum and the Insert Function dialog box.
  • Ranges that you refer to often can be named to enable you to navigate to them quickly.
  • If there are formulas for which you need up-to-the-minute values, the Watch Window enables you to view cell contents without having to navigate to that particular cell.
  • A relative reference in a formula changes when it is copied to a new location. An absolute reference does not change when the formula is copied which allows you to reference a particular cell or range no matter where the formula is copied.

Advanced Formulas

EXPLORE EXCEL’S WIDE VARIETY OF CAPABILITIES FOR COPYING FORMULAS FROM ONE LOCATION TO ANOTHER, DISPLAYING A PARTICULAR DATE OR VALUE, LOCATING DESIRED INFORMATION, AND MORE.  SET CRITERIA THAT SPECIFY WHETHER OR NOT TO PERFORM AN ACTION AND UNDER WHAT CIRCUMSTANCES, AND COMBINE MULTIPLE FIELDS INTO ONE TO IMPROVE VISUAL CLARITY (SUCH AS FIRST NAME AND LAST NAME).

Details:

  • You can simplify creating a function by using the Insert Function feature to access built-in functions in Excel.
  • Make sure other users insert appropriate data by restricting the type of information that can be entered into a cell.
  • Dates and times are values that can be added, subtracted or used in other calculations. The Today function displays the current date in your worksheet.
  • Use the IF function to perform the specified action if the criteria is true and another action if the criteria is false. You can use the AND function with the IF function to add more criteria that must be met for the action to be performed or use the OR function to include alternate criteria that could be met for the action to be performed.
  • Use the VLOOKUP function to search a table for a specified item and then move across the row to return the value of the designated column.
  • Use the PMT function to calculate a periodic loan payment.
  • The concatenate function is used to combine the contents of multiple cells into one cell. You might use the function to combine a cell containing First Name and a cell containing Last Name to display the full name.

Charts

CHARTS ALLOW YOU TO PRESENT NUMERIC INFORMATION IN AN ATTRACTIVE, EASILY EDITED, AND HIGHLY CUSTOMIZABLE GRAPHICAL FORM.  CHOOSE ONE OF EXCEL’S MANY BUILT-IN STYLES TO PRESENT YOUR INFORMATION FOR MAXIMUM IMPACT, AND DISPLAY THE IMPACT OF TRENDS OR FORECASTS ACCORDING TO DATA YOU CHOOSE.

Details:

  • Modify your charts by including new data ranges, editing the labels, including a title, and adding data labels.
  • Add appeal to your charts by formatting the font, color, border or pattern of different chart objects such as the axis and data series.
  • Select from a wide variety of chart types to display your information in the best possible format.
  • Add trend lines to your charts to display trends or forecast future results. There are a variety of trend or regression lines to choose from.
